MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs once again dug themselves an early hole, climbed out of it, but were unable to overtake the Cleveland State Vikings, falling 76-69 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Following Chase Stigall's opening three-pointer, CSU went on a 20-1 run to take a 16-point lead at the 12:39 mark. Butler was held without a field goal from Stigall's trey at the 19:42 mark until an Andrew Smith layup with 12:17 left in the half. After committing five turnovers in the opening six minutes, the Bulldogs made just one miscue for the remainder of the period, pulling within two at halftime, 35-33. Butler tied the game the game at 35, then later took a brief lead following two Smith free throws to pull ahead 41-40 at the 16:15 mark. The Vikings scored the next four points to regain a lead they would not relinquish. CSU stretched that advantage to as many as 11 at 59-48, and led by 10 with 4:30 remaining. Butler made a late surge, fueled by two Stigall three-pointers and one from Nored to pull within three at 72-69 with 0:22 to go but would get no closer. The Vikings clinched the game at the foul line in the final minute, securing a 76-69 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Ronald Nored. Nored had 12 points, seven assists and four rebounds.

Smith led Butler with 13 points to go with four rebounds. Stigall added 12 points and three rebounds. Khyle Marshall finished with 11 points and three rebounds. Roosevelt Jones had nine points and three steals. Kameron Woods added eight points and eight rebounds off the bench, while fellow reserve Chrishawn Hopkins scored four points. Jeremy Montgomery led four Vikings in double figures with 18 points.

A couple of statistics jump out. Butler shot 60% at the foul line (25-for-42), right at their season average of 61%. However, since they attempted 42 free throws, the misses really added up. The other stat of note was the turnover total: both teams had 13, but the Vikings were much more successful at converting them into points, holding a 22-9 advantage in points off turnovers. The Bulldogs simply cannot continue to have poor starts to games. At home, it's more feasible to make a comeback. With so many road games remaining, such comebacks will be significantly more difficult.

Butler wraps up its brief homestand against the Youngstown State Penguins. Game time is Sunday, January 15, at 2:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live in Indianapolis on WNDY-TV 23. Hope to see you there.
