MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Roosevelt Jones' runner at the buzzer propelled the Butler Bulldogs to an exciting 64-63 victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs at a sold-out Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Zags jumped out to a 13-4 lead over the opening six minutes. A 13-5 Butler run cut the deficit to one at 18-17. Kellen Dunham's three-pointer gave Butler its first lead since 3-2 at 22-20. The rest of the half saw the lead change hands three more times, with Sam Dower's triple with under a minute to go giving the Zags a 33-32 halftime advantage. Butler scored the first five points of the second half and held the lead until the 6:27 mark, when Gonzaga tied the game at 50. Five unanswered points gave Butler its biggest lead of the game at 55-50 with 4:31 to go. The Zag battled back, eventually going back on top 59-58 and again at 61-60 with 0:44 left. Alex Barlow drove the lane a made a layup to put Butler ahead 62-61. Kelly Olynyk was fouled underneath by Barlow at the other end and converted both free throws to give the Zags the lead at 63-62. Barlow was called for traveling on the ensuing Butler possession, giving Gonzaga the ball back with 3.5 seconds near midcourt. But Jones stole the lobbed inbounds pass, drove the right side of the lane and pushed a runner over Olynyk at the buzzer, giving Butler a thrilling 64-63 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Jones. In addition to the buzzer-beater, he led Butler with 20 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Dunham also finished in double figures, scoring 14 points. Khyle Marshall added eight points. Chase Stigall had seven points and three rebounds. Fellow senior Andrew Smith finished with seven points and seven rebounds. Barlow added five points, six assists, and four rebounds. Kameron Woods scored two points, while Erik Fromm had one point and three rebounds. Gonzaga was led by Dower and Elias Harris, who finished with 20 points each.

Wow...sold out game, national TV audience, College GameDay at Hinkle, a Butler student hits a halfcourt shot during GameDay to win $18,000, then a clash of top 15 teams with an exciting finish. Not sure you could ask for much more over the span of a Saturday. Things looked bleak in the closing seconds after Barlow's turnover, but the host Bulldogs dug in on defense, Rose made a big steal and a bigger shot, and the crowd went nuts. "I heard the coach tell them to throw the lob to Olynyk," said Jones, "so I played behind him, and I was just making a basketball play. I looked at the clock, and it think it was four seconds, so I knew I could get down. Then I [spun] and I [saw] Olynyk come up to me, and I floated it over him." Playing without leading scorer Rotnei Clarke for the second straight game, Butler used an eight-man rotation for the most part in his absence tonight, and that group provided enough ballhandling, distribution, and scoring to pull out the win. As for Clarke's availability next week? "From what I hear, it's unlikely against La Salle," said head coach Brad Stevens. An amazing atmosphere, another quality win, and another dose of Hinkle magic.

Butler heads back to Philadelphia to face the La Salle Explorers. Game time is Wednesday, January 23, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
